I am fully qualified to fix most problems affecting a piano’s playing. Minor repairs may be completed in the same appointment with tuning. Please make sure to identify any of these small problems so that we can budget enough time in our appointment. Additional charges apply. In other cases, a special appointment may be required.
The piano’s moving parts have cloth and leather bearing surfaces, as well as felts which absorb and transfer energy. Over time, these fibers wear and lose their resiliency. When this happens, they don’t do their job as well—the piano might feel “loose”, doesn’t operate as smoothly, and has a lot of extraneous noises. In the case of worn-out hammers, the sound produced in the string itself will be poor. Rather than replacing parts (quite an investment), the felts, cloths and leathers are usually replaced at this point in a piano’s life, making the action perform like new. Cost depends on the piano and the extent of restoration.
I provide assessments of a piano’s state of repair, its quality of manufacture and the potential costs of restoration. If you’re in the market for a piano, it’s a good idea to have an independent technician look at any piano you are considering buying. The fee for this service is the minimum service charge, $50.
